State of the Smoke: Smelly or Chic?

October 7, 2009

These days there are smoking bans in restaurants, bars, schools, and everything in between. When I was in grade school, second hand smoke was a huge no no and still is… thankfully. But coming from a house where my mother smoked,  (outside or in her own room) it seeped into my clothes anyway and my teachers asked me about my home life, to my embarrassment, quite often. So it was definitely not cool in grade school. Then high school approached. Very few, if any of my friends smoked, even the one’s that did other “substances.” And adult life came at me and suddenly, no peer pressure at all, smoking sounded like a good idea. What? And I now know quite a few smokers. So what’s the deal? I have since reduced my habit to a social and “when drinking” smoker which is somehow even worse than actually committing to it! And I can’t really decide where our culture is on the topic these days. When watching MadMen, the ladies all look so damn chic with their painted nails and lipstick stained cigarettes. But we also rarely see smoking in any Hollywood pop movie. And then, today I came across this sweet pic on the satorialist:

The satorialistDoesn’t she look amazing? So I remain curious about our collective view of smoking. Is it everyone’s dirty little secret? How many people smoke occasionally, but wouldn’t admit it? How different are the views overseas? In Italy and France, smoking is still very very popular. What do you think?

Best Bets on South Congress Ave.

September 23, 2009

South Congress

The neighborhood that was give a hip New York-esque nickname ever so recently. The same neighborhood that was more commonly one for drug dealers and street walkers than hip/wealthy. And now there is one awesome high end restaurant after another and really really fun boutiques lining the street. Best bets? Hmmm there are so many!

South Congress Cafe: This was my very first restaurant in Austin. We were so impressed by their food, that we try to visit as much as humanly possible. Carrot cake french toast. Mmmmmmm.

Feathers:  This vintage boutique is top notch. Many time winner of best vintage in Austin and featured in national magazines such as Rachel Ray.The owner is extremely picky about what she allows into her boutique and you feel like you’re in a very hip and glamorous aunt’s/grandma’s closet.

Woodland: Three words “coconut cream pie” (And half price vino at happy hour!)

Uncommon Objects: Anyone can get lost in here for hours. Somewhat like an antique fair with lots of pizzazz. The division of the seemingly never ending curiosities is by small rooms and each room is carefully curated, mostly by color. Of course, things are more expensive here than an estate sale, but it is often worth the convenience. I found Chris a very “Mad Men” leather briefcase (like a cross between briefcase and doctor bag) that he uses daily for $40.

New Bohemia: Good clean vintage fun. ‘Nuff Said.

Maya Star: The sale rack is always full of gems like Jenny Han and Susana Monaco and they also carry a few lower price point lines ($30 for a dress??? Yes, please.) The staff is wonderful and you will certainly leave much happier than when you walked in.

Goodie 2 Shoes: I absolutely love gladiator sandals, but how much longer will they be in? Goodie2Shoes is the perfect place for such trends. I got an awesome pair for $18. And they lasted through the summer and are still going strong. They also carry very affordable heel and basics like cami’s and T’s. Definitely a must when in SoCo.

by george– Can anyone argue with French Connection, local designers and friendly staff? Nope. (Well my wallet might, but we’re not thinking about that right now)
